Psychiatric Evaluation

Your story is more than a list of symptoms.

A single drop sending concentric ripples across still dark water

Sometimes you know exactly what has been bothering you. Other times, you only know that something feels different, you are more anxious, less motivated, struggling to focus, sleeping poorly, feeling overwhelmed, or simply not feeling like yourself.

A psychiatric evaluation is where we begin making sense of the bigger picture.

At Avenelle, an evaluation is not simply a checklist of symptoms or a race toward a diagnosis. We take time to understand what you are experiencing, when it began, how it affects your everyday life, what you have already tried, and what you hope will change.

Looking beyond the symptoms

Mental health symptoms rarely exist in isolation. Difficulty concentrating, for example, may occur with ADHD, but it can also be influenced by anxiety, depression, trauma, sleep disruption, substance use, medications, medical conditions, or significant life stress.

That is why thoughtful assessment matters. Depending on your needs, your evaluation may explore current symptoms, psychiatric and treatment history, medical history and current medications, sleep and daily functioning, attention and executive functioning, anxiety, mood, and trauma-related symptoms, substance use when clinically relevant, family psychiatric history, school, work, relationships, major life stressors, previous diagnoses and treatment response, safety concerns and protective factors, and your priorities and treatment goals.

What happens after the evaluation?

Once we have a clearer understanding of what may be happening, we discuss our clinical impressions with you and talk through appropriate next steps.

Recommendations may include medication, psychotherapy, behavioral or lifestyle strategies, additional assessment, laboratory testing when appropriate, coordination with another healthcare professional, or simply continued observation before making a treatment decision.

Sometimes the most responsible next step is not immediately prescribing medication. You should understand not only what is being recommended, but why.

Your first appointment is the beginning, not a predetermined outcome.

An initial evaluation does not guarantee a particular diagnosis, medication, controlled medication, or completion of requested documentation. Recommendations are based on the clinical assessment, available information, safety considerations, and professional judgment.
