Substance use does not occur in a vacuum. It can become intertwined with anxiety, depression, trauma, chronic stress, relationships, sleep, physical health, and the ways someone has learned to cope.
At Avenelle, conversations about substance use begin with honesty, safety, and dignity, not shame.
Understanding the whole picture
Depending on your circumstances, we may discuss current and previous substance use, patterns, frequency, and triggers, previous treatment and periods of recovery, withdrawal history, overdose history, co-occurring psychiatric symptoms, current medications, safety risks, support systems, recovery goals, and harm-reduction considerations when clinically appropriate.
The purpose is not to judge the past. It is to understand what may help make the future safer and more sustainable.
Psychiatric care during recovery
Mental health and substance use frequently affect one another. When appropriate, treatment may include psychiatric medication management, treatment of co-occurring mental health conditions, medications used in substance-use treatment when clinically appropriate and legally permitted, education, harm-reduction strategies, and coordination or referral to additional recovery resources.
Knowing when outpatient telehealth isn’t enough
Avenelle is an outpatient telehealth psychiatric practice. We are not a detoxification facility, residential treatment program, inpatient facility, or emergency service. Some situations require a higher level of care than outpatient telepsychiatry can safely provide. When that happens, we will recommend an appropriate level of treatment rather than trying to manage something virtually that requires more intensive support.
