Medication Management

Medication should have a purpose, not simply a place on your medication list.

Medication can be an important part of psychiatric treatment. But prescribing a medication is only the beginning.

At Avenelle, medication management means understanding why a medication is being considered, what we hope it will improve, how we will know whether it is helping, and what we need to monitor along the way.

Thoughtful prescribing starts with thoughtful questions.

Before recommending medication, we consider your symptoms, diagnosis, medical and psychiatric history, previous treatment response, current medications, potential interactions, side effects, personal preferences, and other factors that may influence safety or effectiveness.

When medication is appropriate, we want you to understand what we are treating, why this medication, what improvement we are looking for, what side effects to watch for, and when we should reassess.

Medication decisions should make sense to you, not simply appear on a prescription list.

Treatment should evolve when you do.

During follow-up visits, we may review symptom improvement, side effects and tolerability, sleep, appetite, energy, and functioning, medication adherence, changes in physical or mental health, new medications or supplements, relevant laboratory or vital-sign monitoring, and whether the medication continues to provide meaningful benefit.

Depending on your response, treatment may stay the same, be adjusted, or sometimes be reconsidered entirely. More medication is not automatically better treatment. Our goal is appropriate treatment, not simply more treatment.

Controlled medications

Certain medications require additional assessment, monitoring, documentation, and prescribing safeguards. A request for a specific medication does not guarantee that it will be prescribed. Decisions regarding stimulants, benzodiazepines, and other controlled substances are individualized and based on clinical indication, safety, applicable laws, prescribing requirements, and clinician judgment.

Ready to take the next step?

Whether you are considering medication for the first time or wondering whether your current treatment is still working for you, we can start with a thoughtful review.
