Autism-Informed Psychiatric Care

Care that makes room for the way you experience the world.

Unfurling fern fronds on moss , pattern, texture, and quiet detail

There is no single way to think, communicate, process information, experience sensory input, or move through the world.

For neurodivergent patients, psychiatric care should recognize those differences rather than automatically treating them as problems that need to be corrected. At Avenelle, autism-informed psychiatric care begins with understanding the individual.

We don’t assume every difficulty is “because of autism.”

Autistic children, adolescents, and adults can experience the same psychiatric concerns as anyone else. That may include ADHD, anxiety, depression, mood symptoms, sleep difficulties, trauma-related symptoms, emotional dysregulation, and medication-related concerns.

Understanding how autism, environment, sensory needs, communication preferences, and co-occurring psychiatric symptoms interact can help guide more thoughtful care.

Different doesn’t mean less.

Communication may be direct, detailed, brief, delayed, highly verbal, minimally verbal, or simply different from what another clinician expects. Some patients may need additional processing time. Others may find eye contact uncomfortable. Sensory environments may affect concentration or distress. Parents or caregivers may provide important context for some patients, while others communicate their needs independently.

Our goal is not to force one “correct” way of participating in psychiatric care. It is to create enough room to understand your way.

What treatment can include

When clinically appropriate, treatment may address co-occurring psychiatric symptoms through medication management, behavioral recommendations, coordination with therapy or other professionals, and additional supports.

Avenelle’s psychiatric services are not intended to replace comprehensive neuropsychological, developmental, speech-language, occupational therapy, ABA, or other specialized services when those are needed.

For people discovering neurodivergence later in life

Not everyone was recognized in childhood. Some adults have spent years developing strategies to compensate for social, sensory, organizational, or attention-related differences without understanding why certain parts of life required so much effort.

When questions about autism or other forms of neurodivergence arise, we approach those conversations with curiosity, respect, and appropriate clinical boundaries.

A note about diagnostic programs

This is psychiatric care informed by neurodivergence. It is not a standalone comprehensive autism diagnostic program.

You shouldn’t have to perform a different version of yourself just to participate in your psychiatric care.
