Child & Adolescent Psychiatry
Young people deserve to be heard, too.
Children and adolescents do not always experience, or communicate, mental health concerns the same way adults do.
Anxiety may look like avoidance or frequent physical complaints. Depression may show up as irritability or withdrawal. ADHD may affect school performance, relationships, confidence, and family life. Sometimes the first sign that something is wrong is simply: they’re not acting like themselves.
We listen to the young person and consider the world around them.
A thoughtful child or adolescent psychiatric evaluation may consider emotional and behavioral symptoms, developmental history, attention and executive functioning, sleep, school functioning, family relationships and stressors, social functioning, previous diagnoses and treatment, medical history and medications, safety concerns, and the young person’s own experience of what is happening.
Parents and guardians can provide essential context, but the young person’s voice matters too.
Care that grows with them.
Treatment recommendations depend on age, developmental stage, symptoms, diagnosis, family circumstances, safety considerations, and individual needs. Care may include medication management when appropriate, behavioral recommendations, collaboration with therapists or other clinicians, and recommendations for additional services when needed.
Privacy, parents, and participation
We aim to create an environment where young people can speak openly while appropriately involving parents or legal guardians. Consent, confidentiality, parent or guardian involvement, and opportunities for appropriate private conversation vary according to the patient’s age, clinical circumstances, safety needs, and applicable state law. When safety is at risk, additional information may need to be shared with the appropriate responsible adult or emergency resource.
Ready to take the next step?
Whether concerns are happening at home, at school, or somewhere in between, we can begin by listening.
